The Essence of Communion Wafers

May 12, 2010 · No Comments

If you are not a Christian or just vaguely familiar with the religion, then you might have wondered what communion wafers are and what it’s for.

To let you know, these wafers are used during the Holy Communion to represent the body of Christ. Even though the symbolism is a bit complicated, the ingredients for the piece are actually quite simple.

The thing is if you taste one, it will be quite unlike anything, but this tastelessness in the wafer is crucial to the ceremony instead. It is important since it helps to let people focus their attention on the meaning behind the practice instead.

You can find plenty of manufacturers all over the country. Each one of them has their own special way of creating the wafer, but majority have the same basic recipe.

These two common ingredients include water and pure wheat flour. Of course, as mentioned, other communion breads are created with more complex ingredients than the two, but this depends on the manufacturer.

Some of the other ingredients used in these recipes could include yeast or salt so that it can have a small hint of flavor.

Other manufacturers also provide a very special ingredient in the mix; that special ingredient is holy water.

Manufacturers sometimes sprinkle a small portion of holy water in the dough while it is being mixed. Afterwards, it is baked and then used in the church service.

Most Christians are familiar with communion wafers, however, not everyone knows where or who makes them.

However, this isn’t very surprising since back in the day, the work of creating these wafers fell only to a select few.

During history, the church was the one who picked out special bakers for each parishand this baker was the only one allowed to create the wafer. Moreover, a special oven was designated for this ritual and thus, it was kept sacred.

As time passed, the secrecy faded and the tradition of creating the wafers also changed.

Currently, there are plenty of large suppliers for the wafers. These are companies belonging to the private sector and no longer made by nuns and special bakers appointed by people in church.

Despite the large number of manufacturers, some large companies hold a monopoly when it comes to distributing the wafers to most churches.

The fact is there is one company that supplies over three fourths of the churches found in the United States.

The history and significance of these holy wafers cannot be underestimated. Even though most non Christians might not be familiar with them, there is no doubt that it is an essential part of the faith as well as the ceremony of these churches.

For a Christian, participating in a Holy Communion and taking in communion wafers symbolizes something far beyond the tastelessness of this holy bread, it symbolizes the faith that he has on his Lord and remembers the Lord’s undying love for his children.

Church Candles and Their Essence

December 13, 2009 · No Comments

One of the important things that have long been a part of the church ceremonies and the Christian religion as a whole are Church candles. They are often used to represent many things about the Christian religion. For instance, for the Catholics, the candle can represents the body of Christ. In most Christian baptisms, the candle is taken to symbolize the person’s passage into receiving and being baptized by the light of the Lord. For weddings, the two candles that are lit by the couple’s mothers represent their union. These are only some of the important roles that candles have during worship and ceremonies. The use of candles as a way for lighting the path of darkness has been imbedded in the Christian viewpoint as significant in an unbeliever’s transition into finding the Lord. Moreover, the candles are not only taken to symbolize the light of the Lord, but it also symbolizes the Lord’s love. The usage of church candles crosses all kinds of denominations. Most denominations usually have a preference into the kind of candle that they use for their church or services. For instance, the candles that the Roman Catholic Church uses have to be made from at least 51% beeswax. If it’s an Orthodox church, the requirement would be that it is 100% beeswax. Beeswax is quite an expensive material. This is a primary reason why these same candles are usually recycled and the stubs are used into making new beeswax candles. On the other hand, other denominations only require that a candle that is organic. One ideal church candle used by other sects would be the vegetable wax candles. They are very efficient since these candles burn cleanly, have long burning hours plus they are relatively inexpensive. Using church candles have become a long tradition. Candles that are used today for our ceremonies and traditions were also equally celebrated in the traditions and celebrations in olden times. Let’s see how these candles were used in ancient times and how it has come to evolve through the years. Originally, Egyptians were the ones who used candles to carry out exorcisms, look for treasures and other rituals. Thus, using church candles were not exactly something that the Roman Catholic Church was keen about. The church was hesitant since it was a primary tool in pagan religions. However, the 4th century arrived and it slowly integrated the use of candles in Christian rituals. By this time, it was admitted to the church, however, despite of this, they were still prohibited from being used in the altar since it also had strong associations with witchcraft. It wasn’t until the Middle Ages when the church finally allowed church candles to be used in the altar provided they were blessed and cleanse. These candles were then also used as a way of blessing people, absolving sins, and casting out demons. The use of candles has definitely come a long way. Humans have used candles for many purposes and they have become integrated into our everyday lives as well as special occasions. Not only that, church candles have become a part of our faith and will continue to become one as long as we make it to be.

Communion Cups - Knowing More about Them

December 13, 2009 · No Comments

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is usually the first thing that comes to mind when the layman hears of communion cups.

There is no denying the fact that pop culture has portrayed some of the most significant religious items in a very unorthodox manner, however, the great thing is that because of this they have allowed ordinary people to get acquainted with these same religious items.

In the movie, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Indiana is hunting for what people revere as the ultimate communion cup, the Holy Grail.

In most literary works, you will find that the Holy Grail came to be portrayed as the cup that Christ had used; this also stood for the plate and dish that was used in the Last Supper he had with his disciples.

However, over the centuries, the Holy Grail came to stand for the cup that Jesus used and what we now call the communion cup.

Nevertheless, even if people actually know about it, the use of communion cups all over the world has expanded and is very varied. The cups that are used are usually made from different kinds of materials depending on the people who make it as well as the country they are from.

As an example, the Christian peasants that are from Mexico create cups using baked clay while Christian Palestinians create cups with the use of olive wood.

No matter what communion cups are made for, they serve one major purpose, and that is to symbolize the faith that people have in Christ.

Communion cups have had a long history. From the Holy Grail to the silver chalices used by the Egyptians and Sumerians to the plastic communion cups we use today. They are all significant for the people that use them in their practice.

As mentioned, the Holy Grail or Chalice is celebrated as one of the most sacred vessels in the Church and it is often blessed prior to using it.

History is an integral part of communion cups, whether it be the silver cups that the Egyptians and Sumerians used or the plastic cups that most churches use now. They are an important piece of element for the people that use them.

The chalice or a symbolized form for the Holy Grail is definitely a major part of the church. In fact, for some churches, they are often blessed before they are used.

Out of this faith came the belief in the legends of the cup, from Indiana Jones to Merlin and Dan Brown, the story of the ultimate Communion Cup or the Holy Grail is still alive and celebrated.

Of course, legends and stories about the exact Holy Grail have sifted through and became muddled through the years. Whatever the truth may be, there is no denying the fact that the significance of communion cups in today’s Christian celebrations and among believers is still as strong as ever.
